What Can I Donate to Op Shops in Melbourne?

Without a shadow of a doubt, the question I get asked the most as a Professional Organiser is what can (or can’t) I donate to the op shop?

Unless you’re someone who spends a lot of time browsing the racks at the op shop, this is absolutely a fair and reasonable question.

Most people are very keen to do the right thing by recycling, up cycling, or rehoming their items–whatever it takes to keep them out of land fill, and donating to reputable charities is one of the best ways to do this.

So, what can and can’t be donated to your local charity/opportunity shop?

Of course, this will vary slightly from one op shop to the next, but these are simple guidelines that will help with your decisions. A little tip I often suggest to my clients is to ask yourself,“Would you buy it yourself?”If the answer is yes, then it’s likely suitable for donation.

  1. Clothing and Linen: Clothing donations are always welcome, provided they are clean, in good condition, and free from holes or damage. This includes clothing for all ages and seasons, as well as accessories like shoes, bags, scarves, and even bras. Similarly, linen such as sheets, towels, and blankets should be clean and in great condition

  2. Accessories and Small Household Items: Small household items like kitchenware, decorative items, and accessories can also be donated, as long as they are undamaged and complete (no missing parts). If you have five wine glasses from a set of six, by all means, please donate them. Items like picture frames, vases, and ornaments are often in demand and can find new homes through op shops. Crockery, cutlery, and cookware are also welcome if they are in good condition

  3. Books, Toys, and Entertainment: Books, toys, games, and entertainment items are popular donations that can provide hours of enjoyment for new owners. Games need to be complete (yes, all puzzle pieces included), but these items are often eagerly snapped up by shoppers and young children. Please ensure DVDs or CDs are in their covers; loose discs are not donatable.

  4. Appliances and Electronics: Some op shops may accept small appliances and electronics, but it's essential to check their donation guidelines first (they will have to test them and don’t always have the facilities or staff to undertake this process). Items like toasters, kettles, and DVD/CD players may be accepted if they are in good working condition, but larger appliances or items with complex electrical components may not be suitable

  5. Miscellaneous: Even old glasses can find new life through op shops. Frames are often reused or repurposed, with new lenses added.Jewellery is always a popular choice for donating to op shops. Old costume jewellery, watches, necklaces, and earrings are all suitable–just be sure to check you aren’t passing on Nan’s antique diamond heirloom in your decluttering frenzy. Pet accessories such as dog leads and vests are also widely accepted at most op shops

Finally, here is a quick list of items that (despite our best intentions) most likely won’tbe accepted at op shops (unless new and in their packaging)

  • Bed pillows

  • Underlays

  • Underwear (new in packets is OK)

  • Broken or chipped crockery

  • Scratched cookware

  • Some electrical items

  • Cots, prams, and car seats are often not accepted due to safety concerns

  • School/university textbooks are often unsuitable as they become outdatedvery quickly

Donating to op shops in Melbourne is a wonderful way to support charity, reduce waste, and give unwanted items a new lease on life. By donating clean, in-use, undamaged, and complete items, you can help raise money for important causes while promoting sustainability and community support. Without taking anything away from the large charities such as the Salvos and Vinnies, there are loads of smaller charities that support wonderful causes, including animal rescue shelters, and they are always so very grateful for all donations. Share the love far and wide, and your efforts will be greatly appreciated

Happy Decluttering!
